NCAA Investigation, APR Mess, Hiring/Firing Blunders … What’s Next??

10743drowning I appreciate the tireless hours that Georgia Southern athletic director Sam Baker puts in on those white sneakers, but sometimes you have to wonder what’s happening to our athletics program.

Yes, I know he works hard in a probably thankless job.

However, we’ve had a mess of football coaches in the past few years, a proverbial revolving door.

Yes, I know BVG wasn’t necessarily Sam’s fault.

Not to mention, we’re having a heck of a hard time trying to figure out and fix the APR situation.

Yes, I know that coaches are responsible for some (or a lot) of this.

On top of that, we have players being suspended, cut, and leaving the team in what can only be described as “too often”.

Yes, I realize that will happen sometimes and coaching turnover doesn’t help it.

But word finally breaks about this NCAA investigation in to Georgia Southern.

Yes, I know it was probably self-reported and such.

But, does anyone else just get frustrated with the way things have gone recently?

Yes, I’m sure there are some logical reasons (or excuses, depending on your POV) for all of this stuff coming to happen.

But on some level, regardless of the why, we need someone to start providing direction and solutions to these issues.

We seem to have squandered, or at least stalled, a lot of our momentum.

At what point do we gain any confidence in our leaders’ vision (and pursuit) of the future?

Color me concerned.

What momentum? This entire athletic program hasn’t had any momentum at all since Paul Johnson left. Since then, there have been woefully few bright spots, an ever-declining level of play, off field scandals, and NCAA/APR sanctions and investigations. Nice job, Sam Baker.
The guy runs the program like he’s balancing his personal checking account. There’s no investment in the future, no risk, and very little reward. Just a lot of scaling back and defensive answers to legitimate questions.
yet people still defend him. don’t get it.

Yeah, that was my point … the momentum we had for the first 20 years.

I have been concerned ever since PJ left we have been in a nose dive and seem to have landed in the town Mediocrity. Sam missed the boat in 1999 and we have paid dearly for it ever since. Long gone are the days of playoff being a given or a huge upset if we did not make it or riding the momentum of an National Championship to a real division of football. Now with the never ending APR mess in MULTIPLE sports, NCAA investigations, lack of conference championships, the revolving door our football team has become it amazes me everday how this man is able to keep his job. What is even sadder is the amount of apologist this guy has. This guy is not an Eagle he had no loyalty before he was hired and he will not after he leaves. I am tired of the mushroom treatment and the slow demise of a program that was unstoppable at one time. When one of your AD’s goals is to establish a rivalry with a team like Coastal Carolina it is time for some new blood. We need a leadeship bailout!!
